What's an “AI employee”? One job, done well
What if you had a helper that answered the same customer questions every day, drafted your quotes, or kept your follow-ups from slipping through the cracks?
That's what people mean by an "AI employee": an AI assistant set up to handle one specific job in your business. Not everything. One job.
How to pick the job
The best first job has a few things in common:
- It repeats. The same kind of work comes up again and again.
- The inputs look alike. A missed call, a web form, an estimate request.
- The rules are clear. You could explain to a new hire how to handle it in ten minutes.
- You can check it. It's easy to see whether it was done right.
Answering after-hours calls, replying to new inquiries, and following up on estimates usually fit. Pricing a complicated job usually doesn't, at least not yet.
Start small and keep the off switch
Set it up to do the one job, watch what it does for a week, and decide what it may send on its own and what waits for your OK. A good setup has a named person responsible, a list you can see, and an off switch.
No tech background is needed to start. If you're in the Triangle, the AI for Small Business Meetup NC covers topics like this every month in Cary.
